There are definitely valid criticisms of Zero Dawn - and its biggest issue wasn't solved by Forbidden West either - but it's generally held in very high esteem. With third-person action adventure games being something of a modus operandi for Sony first party games during the PS4 era, it wasn't entirely surprising to see Guerrilla Games abandon Killzone after the lackluster reception of Shadow Fall, but it was surprising to see just how competently made the studio's first attempt at an open world was. On February 28, 2017, Horizon Zero Dawn released for the PlayStation 4 and was widely celebrated for its unique setting, compelling and millennium-spanning narrative, and exciting machine combat. The circumstances surrounding the releases of of Zero Dawn and Forbidden West are certainly unfortunate, but they likely haven't been exceptionally detrimental to the games in the long run. Now all a third game has to do is find a launch week that it can have all to itself. Horizon Forbidden West is a superb sequel with an absolutely gorgeous open world, and by almost all accounts has improved on nearly every aspect of its predecessor. Both Horizon games are extremely good, and have managed to stand amongst PlayStation's other celebrated exclusives after coming from a developer previously known for being the creators of the Killzone FPS franchise. This isn't a knock against the Horizon series nor Guerrilla Games, which most definitely owns a calendar. Related: How Old Aloy Is In Horizon Forbidden West The Horizon games are successful by any metric in their own right, garnering high review scores and selling very well (presumably Forbidden West will have comparable financial success to Zero Dawn), but they've now both been immediately followed by another studio's game that flirts with greatest of all time territory. History is prone to repeating itself, but the odds of this exact situation happening to two games from the same series just five years apart seem like they would be incredibly unlikely. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild came on the heels of Horizon Zero Dawn, and now Horizon Forbidden West is getting only a week in the spotlight before the release of Elden Ring, the highest-rated FromSoftware game yet.
